Internet Search Engine Marketing

Internet Search Engine Marketing… what the heck is it, exactly, and why should anyone with a web site be concerned with it?

Internet Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is, or should be, the single most important aspect of your website. The function of SEM is to attract a steady stream of organic traffic (which is completely free!) from the search engines to your web site, month after month, and traffic is the life blood of your web site,

To succeed at getting organic traffic you will need to be in the top 20, preferably, the top 10 search results, and there are two elements that will determine how well your site ranks at the search engines: content & inbound links.

As an example of just how important Internet Search Engine Marketing is I will use a personal bit of misfortune as an example…

Two years ago I created what I thought was an excellent web site. Much like this site it was content rich and focused on succeeding with a home business.

When I started the site I had heard of Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization. I knew they were important, but I thought they were optional. And because I was using other methods to drive traffic to my site, I wasn’t too concerned with my lack of knowledge about Internet Search Engine Marketing or SEO. Also, I was of the mind that If I Built It, They Would Come…

Sadly, at that time, I didn’t really know much about how websites and search engines interacted, but I did know that my site had all the right elements: an opt-in form so I could build a contact list, a wonderful free report to encourage visitors to opt-in, tons of great content (and I do mean tons… over 100 articles!), a nice design and pretty colors…

In my mind, my site was primo!

But, I was wrong. In the eyes of the search engines my site was not primo and it didn’t get any organic traffic. This is likely because with the very limited knowledge that I did have about SEO, I targeted keywords that were far too competitive, so though people may have been looking for what I had to offer they would never have found my site, which was likely buried on the last page of about 300,000 for the keywords I had used.

Looking back I see that I had gone entirely wrong in every way that it was possible to go wrong… It was like jumping into the middle of a cold, deep, lake without the faintest idea how to swim.

My first mistake was not educating myself about Internet Search Engine Marketing. My second mistake was thinking that even though I had used keywords in my articles – I really didn’t even have a basic understanding of how to use them properly.

That said – what should I have done? What exactly should I have focused on?

If I had really wanted good results from my site, I should have focused on what SEO and Internet Search Engine Marketing were all about!

Above I mentioned that success with SEO and SEM are dependent on content and inbound links. If you want your site to flourish with lots of free, organic traffic from the search engines, month after glorious month, here are a couple of very important things to consider.

Regarding content. Content is not merely putting words on the page. It doesn’t matter how good that content may be – it must target the right keywords. When I wrote all the articles for my first web site I focused on writing what I thought people needed to learn in order to succeed with a home business.

Silly me! What I should have written were articles based on the information that people with a home business were looking for! But, I didn’t know that at the time…

So, in order to make your content count, do a little research to find out what keywords people are using to look for information. Once you find out what information people are looking for you can serve it up in abundance using the right keywords.

Also, don’t target keywords that have too much competition. What do I mean by too much competition? Well, take for instance the keyword home business, which is the keyword I used for my first site. People search the keyword Home Business at Google about two and half million times per month.

Wow – two and a half million times per month – that sounds great, doesn’t it! That’s a lot of potential traffic! And though it is great for the top twenty sites, it won’t be for you or me.

Unfortunately, there are currently almost 4 million existing web sites that target the keyword home business. How well will a new site do using that keyword to drive traffic in its direction? Where will it end up when searched on Google?

I’ll give you a hint… somewhere near the bottom of page 299,986 of the search results… With that much existing competition it would be a long hard battle to fight your way up to the top 10 or 20 sites.

It’s simply too much competition.

So, when you are doing your keyword research you’re looking for words or phrases that have high search volume.  High search volume per month on a keyword ensures that you will get traffic for that keyword, and the fewer existing sites already targeting that keyword the better. You’re looking for keywords with high demand, and low supply.

Alright – moving right along to inbound links. Inbound links are links back to your site from other sites and they are almost as important as content. Inbound links help the search engines determine your site’s popularity and relevance.

Each inbound link to your site acts like a vote for your site, indicating to the search engines that your site ranks highly with internet users for relevant content.

How do you get inbound links? There are many ways to get links back to your site and my favorite is articles. Write some great articles and submit them to places like Ezine Articles or Go Articles. When your articles are published you will get some terrific inbound links from both your author bio and the articles themselves.

Blogging is another great way to get inbound links. Create a blog on your web site then submit your blog to a few of the best blog directories. As well, visit blogs written by others in your field and make positive and relevant comments on their posts. Each time you do you create an inbound link to your site.

And don’t forget to make use of forums – your sig file is invaluable in a forum ! Every time you comment in a forum, your sig file creates another inbound link to your site.

There is a great deal to consider when using Internet Search Engine Marketing to get traffic to your site and it would be well worth your time to learn how to use it effectively.

Don’t expect to learn it all overnight – it’s a bit complicated and there is a learning curve. It takes time to find keywords that are just right, time to write your content, and time to build links back to your site. You also need to understand that you won’t see results overnight either – it takes time to start seeing traffic.

Success with Search Engine Marketing takes time – but do give yourself and your site the time. You only have to learn it once, and it’s the absolute best way to generate a steady stream of organic traffic to your site month after month. It’s well worth the time it can take to get it.
